Berlin in Snow

This painting is of Tiergarten, the main park in Berlin. Berlin is where I first started as an artist in 1998 (and I was lucky enough to visit the city again this year during which it was unusually snowy). This spot is right next to the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and the Jewish Memorial. By 1945 virtually all the trees in this park had been destroyed, anything left was felled and used as firewood. The trees in this painting have been planted since. Concerningly, the far right AFD party gained over 20% of the vote in Germany's 2025 election (having also been strongly endorsed by Elon Musk). I wanted to paint this work as a reminder that we should resist the tide of extremism in our communities and that we demonise minorities at our peril. We should stand together and not let others divide us. Berlin in Snow, oil on canvas 30” x 40”.
